I want to give a title to this oil painting “Role playing”.

My opinion about this painting is that it has a complex philosophical air and is painted with realistic technique. We can realize the style is influenced by symbolism and romanticism. It contains all of the fervent emotions of the artist who painted it.

The artist surrounded the subject of this painting with dark space. The background is completely dark and the light source is mysterious. We can clear see the light is coming from the left and gives power to this work. The light is reflected by many surfaces. It shows up as highlights on the two figure’s bodies and the floor. The color of floor shows a liaison with the two figure’s bodies.

Two figures are on the plane of the picture: one is true and the other is unreal. But, what is real and what is unreal? Who is artist, and which is work? It seams difficult to distinguish. Even sometimes we are puzzled. Look at the right side, from the woman’s head to knee, she looks like a true human, because she has the texture of skin. Under of knees, it turns into gypsum. Then, look at the left side, the man has opposite texture. So, it is difficult to determine what the primary is and what the secondary is. That are exactly why the artist wants viewers to think about. Did the artist mold the statue or the statue carves the artist? In the process of creation, is the artist influenced by the work, or the work is influenced by the artist? When the artist strives to scheme incessantly and creates a perfect work, in the meanwhile, the work also wants to build a perfect master. Maybe the statue has its own aesthetic views, hasn’t it? This is an interesting question and is worth to think deeply.

The artist carved exquisitely in order to endow the statue with a true life. By way of hard work for a long time, he succeeds but dedicates his whole life. A creation involved in extreme hardships and difficulties. The spirits of indomitable creations of artists will continue and are endless until their dying day.

In the background, we can see many damaged gypsum statues. They are failure works. It is necessary that an artist constructs a perfect work of art via much collapse and failure. After appreciating this work, I believe that everyone who devotes oneself to a creation will feel indebted as if it were received in person.
